Are there any gamedevs or just fans of games here? Lately I started to wonder where developers get ideas for games. I understand that they often use mythology, legends, folk tales, etc. But do you think that native culture can really inspire something cool and unique? Or does everyone still make copies of Western games?

I never even thought that games can dig so deeply into cultural features. I was especially hooked by the idea of reincarnation and the influence of past decisions on the future - this is just a gorgeous game mechanic that is not found anywhere!
By the way, it is culture that is becoming a real treasure for developers. I recently read an interesting article — https://www.mumbaikarsperspective.com/entertainment/indian-folklore-inspires-next-generation-of-game-developers/cid16798327.htm — it describes how folklore inspires a new wave of Indian developers. It turns out that they have a lot of unique stories not only about Rama and the Mahabharata. For example, local legends from Assam or Jharkhand, which no one knows at all, become the basis for new game worlds. And they approach it in a smart way - the games use the ideas of reincarnation, karma, interaction with the spirits of nature. This is not at all like the usual Western "hero saves the world".
